The European Soil Observatory is a group of experts and researchers of the Joint Research Centre that is responsible for the monitoring and assessment of the state of soils in the European Union. Once a year, they organise a high-level event around the topic of soils and its political relevance at EU level, bringing together stakeholders from various institutions.

About
This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Forum and will address the topic on How can healthy soils increase EU competitiveness?
The first day of the event is going to take place on 12 June and will host distinguished speakers from the sector:
- Pascal Chapot - Head of Sustainable Agriculture Development at Nestlé
- Albert Schirring - Manager at Bayer Crop Science
- Erik Mathijs - Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at KU Leuven
The event will also feature an introduction by Alessandra Zampieri, Director of Sustainable Resources at the JRC.

Agenda
During this event, case studies from the private sector will show how healthy soils can promote competitiveness in terms of the three pillars:
- closing the innovation gap
- decarbonisation and competitiveness
- reducing excessive dependencies
The focus is on business models that address the impact of healthy soils on boosting EU competitiveness. Interesting presentations will include business models related to carbon farming, remediation of contaminated sites, the banking sector, AgriTech, the food chain, biotechnology, the development of bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides, and laboratories.
