Current drought situation in Europe

The latest status of drought in Europe using a combined drought indicator.

Detailed analysis of drought conditions

Alert drought conditions

Some areas in the Mediterranean region - particularly south-eastern Spain, Cyprus, Greece, and south-eastern Balkans - remain under persistent alert drought conditions, which are affecting the vegetation. Alert conditions also persist in western, south-eastern and central Türkiye, northern and western Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, parts of Jordan, northern Iraq, Iran and Azerbaijan.

Alert conditions are rapidly emerging in large areas of Ukraine and in neighboring countries, impacting crops and vegetation.

In northern Africa, alert and warning conditions have persisted for over a year. Improvements have been slow, with conditions remaining critical.

Warning and watch drought conditions

Warning drought conditions are present in the Baltic Sea region, Ireland, the UK, northern France, Benelux, several regions of Germany, some areas on the northern slopes of the Alps, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Belarus, most of Ukraine, Southern Russia, central and western Romania, Bulgaria, some regions of Greece, small areas of the western Balkans, Cyprus, most of Türkiye, Malta, and southern Mediterranean islands.

Several regions in Great Britain, central Europe, Baltic Sea region, Scandinavia, eastern Romania, are under watch conditions due to a persistent precipitation deficit.

Normal and recovery drought conditions

Northern Scandinavia, most of the Iberian Peninsula, the centre and south of France, northern and central Italy, wide areas in the western Balkans, southern and eastern Austria, Switzerland, southern Czechia, Hungary, the Carpathian Mountains, and parts of Greece show normal or recovery conditions.
